Bilateral Relations

Liberia and Morocco maintain strong diplomatic relations based on mutual cooperation and historical ties. Since the establishment of their bilateral relations, the two countries have collaborated in various fields, including diplomacy, trade, and education.

The cherished relations can be traced to the 1960s when the two nations championed the cause for the total emancipation of all African states under the yoke of colonialism. The kind efforts of Liberia that gave rise to the Sanniquellie Conference of 1959 in Sanniquellie, Liberia and that of the Kingdom of Morocco in the context of the Casablanca Conference of 1961, morphed into the creation of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963.

Liberia opened its Embassy near Rabat in 1996. The Kingdom reopened its Embassy near Monrovia in 2024. The relationship continues  to  strength  with more positive engagements through the holding of the sessions of Joint Commission of Cooperation, namely :

  • First Session of the Liberia- Morocco Joint Commission of Cooperation in Monrovia, Liberia – April 2011
  • Second Session of the Liberia- Morocco Joint Commission of Cooperation in Marrakech, Morocco- March 2019
  • Third Session of the Liberia- Morocco Joint Commission of Cooperation in Laayoune Morocco- January 2025

Liberia opened its Consulate General in Dakhla in March 12, 2020 in further demonstration of its full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom inclusive of its southern provinces and moreover, it remains committed to supporting Morocco’s autonomy proposal for its southern provinces as the most credible and realistic solution.

Liberia’s membership in regional organizations accredited to the Kingdom of Morocco to include :

  • The Ministerial Conference on Fisheries Cooperation among African States bordering the Atlantic Ocean (ATLAFCO)
  • African Center for Administrative Training and Research for Development(CAFRAD)
